We, SHAN Research Group (SRG), first at University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) (07/2014–06/2019) and then at Syracuse University (07/2019–present), are a team of mechanicians, materials engineers and roboticists who are interested in interdisciplinary research in Smart, Hybrid, Active and Nature-inspired Materials, Mechanics, and Machines (SHAN 3M). An expert in these areas, Principal Investigator Dr. Wanliang Shan spearheads SRG’s multifaceted synergistic research efforts. We emphasize the fundamental insights from solid mechanics, materials engineering, thermophysics, and machine learning for the design, fabrication, and understanding of mechanical behaviors of soft electronics, multifunctional materials, and other high-performance materials and structures. We use these fundamental insights to impact critical domains such as soft robotics, wearable devices, and biomedical devices, towards the ultimate goal of improving the interactions between humans, machines, and environments. Our research, innovation and educational efforts have been supported by NSF (CMMI-MEP, NRI, IIP-ICorps, and EEC-HRD), UNR and Syracuse University.
